Customers buy systems based on specifications or how they hear them in a showroom. Their expectation is the system will perform wonderfully in their homes based on the specifications matched perfectly to their requirement or based on their experience when they heard it in the showroom, but each space has its own unique acoustic signature which affects the system performance.
Challenge
Every room where consumers watch movies or listen to music is different. And every variation -- from room size and shape, to window treatments and floor coverings -- can affect the sound from the most sophisticated surround sound systems and music systems.
How does one get the same performance from the system as promised in the brochure? How does one ensure the experience we give our customer in the showroom is matched by the performance back at his home irrespective of his room acoustics?
Solution
Bose engineers took this challenge up to find a solution. In 2002, they presented the ADAPTiQ™ audio calibration system, a proprietary innovation that analyzes and adjusts the system setting for a consumer’s particular room, speaker location, even listener location -- all factors that impact the audio performance of any sound system.
Until now, customizing an audio system was laborious and expensive, often requiring audio engineers and specialized equipment. The ADAPTiQ™ system simplifies the process, bringing the benefits of audio room calibration to consumers looking for a complete solution they can set-up themselves.
What is ADAPTiQ™
ADAPTiQ™ is an audio calibration system, which increases Lifestyle® system performance and delivers a new level of “sound assurance” – one that cannot be delivered by any other complete home entertainment system today.
In keeping with the Bose® Lifestyle design philosophy, the ADAPTiQ™ system offers the opportunity for optimum performance in a given room with minimal customer involvement and stress. First, the system learns as much as possible about a particular room and speaker placement through a feedback approach. Then, it calculates “custom-tailored” solution to bring the listener’s experience close to the engineer’s laboratory target.
Technical Features
Key features of the ADAPTiQ™ system include:
• Fine-structure analysis. The system analyzes thousands of frequencies produced by the cube speakers, and a thousand more bass frequencies from the module.
• Robust process. Any time a problem is sensed, the system makes suggestions to correct it before continuing. The process prevents bad measurements from influencing the final equalization.
• Powerful computation. The DSP (digital signal processing) engine that powers Videostage™ decoding technology is temporarily harnessed by the system for extensive calculations.
• Comprehensive optimization. The system considers thousands of equalization alternatives before a final digital equalization is loaded into system memory.
• Full-bandwidth action. From the lowest audible frequencies that depend on room construction and dimensions through the middle and highest frequencies that are affected by furniture and room furnishings, the system has full-bandwidth action.
• Speed and Simplicity. Less than 15 minutes.
Learning Applied
There are a number of other technologies and products on the market today that have similar objectives: compensating for the room to provide optimum performance. The new ADAPTiQ™ system is different from many of these offerings across three dimensions: simplicity, performance and value.
Simplicity. ADAPTiQ™ audio calibration system technology is part of the Lifestyle system. Other approaches may require extensive measurements, the installation and learning of PC software, or possibly the creation of a target room-response curve. Some even require in-home visits from factory-trained technicians.
Performance. As outlined above, the ADAPTiQ™ system uses extremely fine equalization to address challenges throughout the audio spectrum. The compensation applied by most other systems is limited on a number of fronts. In some, graphic equalization is not fine enough. Bass-only corrections in others address only part of the problem. Some systems work only with full-range speakers; others only with stereo.
Value. ADAPTiQ™ system is included in all the Lifestyle™ DVD home entertainment systems. Most other solutions on the market are additional components – not only adding to the complexity, but also to the cost. Such additional costs may range into the many thousands of dollars.
